Making dreams come true: Goldman Sachs makes teen cancer patient an investment banker for a week
Unlike most kids at seventeen, California teen Terry “Tre” Grinner knew exactly where he wanted his career path to lead him in future. Tre wanted to be an investment banker. But life has a way of throwing curveballs and in December of last year, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Treatment began and chemotherapy came with it, a heavy burden for anyone, let alone a teenager. However, his reliance and the support of his family has seen him through. Not only that, but thanks to his mother’s letter to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a national children’s charity that grants wishes of kids with life-threatening medical conditions, Tre has now been given the opportunity of a lifetime.
Make-A-Wish teamed up with Goldman Sachs to give Tre a week-long investment banking internship in New York City.
In an interview with the Business Insider, Tre said “It’s meant so much to me. It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of.” He got to learn the ropes from top notch professionals as they introduced him to various brokers and took him on a visit to the New York Stock Exchange.
His deep interest for complex subjects is what attracted him to Wall Street. “So far, investing has been the most complicated thing I have ever attempted to understand – bonds, futures, IPOs, mergers & acquisitions-and the way they connect to global markets and global news is amazing to me.”
